A small area of decay on the enamel of one of your teeth, is commonly referred to as a cavity. Your dentist can usually repair a small cavity in a simple procedure where they remove the decayed enamel and fill it with a material that is not subject to tooth decay. Your dentist will recommend different materials for your filling based on its location, size and relationship to your smile.

Amalgam fillings are very durable. However, because amalgam has a dark color it is rarely used on teeth that are visible in your smile. These are often put in the back of your smile, where people will not be able to see judging by your smile.

Composite fillings are made from a resin material that can be color matched and placed in a single procedure. This filling is more popular in the front of your smile because it can be color matched.

If you have a cavity on one or more of your teeth, you should have it repaired as soon as possible. Left unchecked, the extent of the tooth decay can compromise more enamel or the root of the tooth.
